Individual Volunteer Opportunities at Merrick Community Services:
Our greatest need right now is helping to serve our Seniors. Please see descriptions of all of the Individual Volunteering opportunities below and then complete the Volunteer Application online or download and submit a Volunteer Application (PDF) in person.
Meals on Wheels Delivery Driver: We are seeking volunteers as individuals or in pairs to help with delivering meals to homebound seniors in Saint Paul (focusing on the East Side). Monthly commitment – one assigned day per month from 11am to Noon (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday) Individuals or pairs can sign up for a monthly “meal shift” (i.e. the first Monday of the month). Drivers will choose a “route” upon availability and will be in charge of delivering hot meals to seniors in their homes over the course of an hour. Some seniors enjoy socializing during the meal drop-off, others are happy just to see a friendly face. Volunteers must have a valid driver’s license, have their own transportation, and must pass a background check.
Lawn Mowing & Maintenance: Senior Chore Services is seeking volunteers to help with mowing lawns and essential yard maintenance for seniors in Saint Paul (focusing on the East Side and spreading through other areas of Saint Paul as well). Individuals or pairs can sign up to take responsibility for specific homes – typically mowing once a week and providing other required lawn maintenance so seniors can remain in their homes and within the municipal yard care expectations. Volunteers are asked to provide their own yard clean up materials (mower, rakes, yard bags, etc.). Typically, volunteers are assigned a specific yard (or more) to provide lawn maintenance, and they are provided the addresses and names of the seniors identified by Merrick needing yard help. Volunteers independently arrive at the identified locations and report back to the Merrick staff person via phone after services have been completed. These efforts allow seniors to save their precious financial resources for other needs, and also put a smile on their faces. If interested, please contact us in February for Spring and August for Fall volunteer opportunities.
Food Shelf Shopper/Stocker: Accompany clients as they shop in the food shelf. Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds. Shifts are Wednesdays & Thursdays 10:00am-2:00pm. Stock shelves as needed. Unload and organize boxed and packaged food. Must be able to lift at least 30 pounds. Shifts are open anytime during Food Shelf hours.
